Four covers, four different jobs
A solar cover floats on the surface, traps heat and cuts evaporation — it is the cheapest thing you can buy that makes a measurable difference to running costs, and it will not support weight. A debris cover keeps leaves out during the season or over winter. A winter cover is heavier, sits over the pool through the closed months and keeps the water clean until spring. A safety cover is engineered to take a load and is the only type intended to bear weight. They are not substitutes for one another, and most pools end up with two.
Why a solar cover pays for itself
Most of the heat a pool loses goes from the water surface overnight through evaporation, not through the walls or the floor. A floating solar cover interrupts that, and typically cuts overnight heat loss substantially. In practice it means a heat pump running for fewer hours to hold the same temperature, and water that is comfortable earlier in the season. If you have a heat pump and no cover, the cover is the higher-return purchase of the two.
Fit and handling
Measure the pool at the waterline, not the outside of the timber. A solar cover should be trimmed to the water shape so it lies flat with no gaps at the edge. Covers for larger pools get heavy and awkward once wet — a roller is close to essential above about 5 m, and is the difference between a cover that gets used every evening and one that stays folded by the shed.
Common questions
Does a solar cover really heat a pool?
It does two things: it lets solar gain through and, more importantly, it stops the evaporation that carries most of a pool’s heat away overnight. Used consistently it will add several degrees over a week of decent weather and significantly reduce the hours a heat pump needs to run.
What is the difference between a winter cover and a safety cover?
A winter cover keeps debris and light out through the closed season so the water stays manageable until spring. A safety cover is engineered and anchored to take a load. Only a safety cover is intended to bear weight — never treat a solar, debris or winter cover as a safety barrier.
What size cover do I need?

Do I need a roller for my pool cover?
Above about 5 m, effectively yes. A wet solar cover is heavy and unwieldy, and a cover that is a nuisance to move is a cover that stops being used. A roller turns it into a thirty-second job at each end of a swim.
