6. Heating the Tropic Octo 414 Pool

If you are looking to heat the Tropic Octo 414 Pool, you have the choice of two options:

  1. Electric Heater which is cheap to buy but expensive to run
  2. Heat Pump which is cheap to run but slightly more expensive to buy.

This Tropic Octo 414 Pool has 10m3 of water so these heating options will be ideal:

1/ Electric Heater which is cheap to buy but expensive to run and will heat your pool all year long.

You will achieve 1 Kw of heat output into the water for every 1 Kw of power used from your supply. So works out a lot more expensive to run than the Heat pump option.

Elecro Evolution 2 Analogue Swimming Pool 1/3 Phase Electric Heaters 3kw - 24kw
4.5Kw Elecro Evolution Electric Pool Heater,

(Must be kept Indoors or in Plant Housing)

2/ If you are looking to use a Heat Pump to keep the running cost down then you have to decide which months of the year you want to swim:

  • Summer (May – Sep)
  • Extended Season (Apr – Oct)
  • All Year

Once you have decided this you can than look to see which heat pump is the best one for you. Now this will vary depending on the pool’s location in the country as the outside air temperature is drastically different in Scotland from Cornwall’s air temperatures (taking into account the worst temperatures at night and the coldest parts of the period you choose).

We can help size the correct unit for you to ensure you achieve the desired water temperature (normal temp for this pool is 28 degrees, and it should not be heated over 30 degrees as this reduces the life span of the liner).

As a rough guide for this pool we have added some options at the top of this listing for you, but here is a explanation to the season to expect from each. Please bear in mind that you can never over size a heat pump but the results of under sizing it will mean you will not have the water temperature you require for the period you want. In addition to this, if you are further up North please increase the size of your heat pump to compensate for the colder outside air temperatures:

Tropic Wooden Pool

Upkeep of the structure of the Tropic Octo 414 Pool
Wood is a living material; changes in humidity and temperature will cause the wood to work and could lead to cracking or splitting. This is a natural phenomenon that in no way impacts the service life of our products. The autoclave treatment undergone by the wooden elements of this pool complies with the standards in effect and presents absolutely no danger to people or animals coming into contact with it. Under no circumstances should any product be applied to the wood (for example: wood stain, paint, oil, micro porous product, etc.).
Inevitably, the wood will become dirty over time. You may clean the wood once a year using a high pressure jet to remove dirt from the pores in the wood. Adjust the water pressure carefully to avoid damaging the surface treatment, or raising wood fibres. Inspect the wooden structure regularly (particularly the coping and wooden access steps) and remove any splinters that may have appeared.
The pools structure is a free standing structure. However, a slight deformation of the walls between the supporting braces may be observed, caused by the natural elasticity of wood. The pool is delivered as a kit and is not designed to be dismantled.

Water Treatment and maintaining water quality

To ensure the comfort of pool users, you will need to treat the pool water. Follow the recommendations concerning operation of the filtration group: commissioning, frequency of use for regeneration of the water, maintenance, inspections (pipes, nuts and bolts), etc. Monitor the build up of dirt in the sand filter (see the section on filter back washing). During the pool season, the filter should be run every day for long enough to renew the entire pool water volume at least three times every 24 hours. To ensure optimal efficiency of the filtration system, make sure that the water level remains correct and constant. The water level should be 2/3 of the way up the skimmer mouth. To fill your pool, use tap water, its pH is close to the ideal pH. You will need to test the pH of your pool at regular intervals and adjust it if necessary to keep it between 7.0 and 7.4. Treatment chemicals for this purpose are widely available. To preserve the quality of the pool water, it will need to be tested and treated regularly. Frequency will depend on a number of conditions; pool situation, bather load, weather conditions, etc. As pool water cannot be directed into the sewage system, it must be directed as rain run-off. Familiarise yourself with the regulations concerning disposal of pool waste water in effect in the area in which the pool is located. Failure to abide by maintenance instructions may entail serious risks to health and safety, notably of children.

Once the pool is filled, the water quality will naturally begin to degrade due to pollutants carried in by bathers (bodily secretions, but also twigs, grass, earth, sand, etc. stuck to their feet and their skin), as well as pollutants carried by the wind (leaves, petals, pollen), and insects. The water will therefore need to be replaced periodically. The frequency of replacement will depend on the water temperature, the bather load, the length of the daily filtration window and the use of pool chemicals.

Filtration slows the natural degradation of water by trapping tiny particles (from a few millimeters across to a few tens of microns). The length of the daily filtration window necessary will mainly depend on the level of pollution carried into the water and the water temperature. For information purposes, while the pool is in daily use, the minimum filtration times recommended are as follows:

The length of the filtration cycle corresponds to the time required for one pool water volume to pass through the filter. For a private pool, the minimum accepted length of the filtration cycle is 6 hours. During the pool season, filtration must be run every day.

Recommendations will vary depending on the pool water temperature:

Water temperature of 14°C: 5-6 hours per day;
Water temperature of 15-23°C: 6-8 hours per day;
Water temperature of 23° and above C: 10-12 hours per day;

CAUTION🚩Please do not push down on the handle of the pump and filter as this will cause damage to the filter that is NOT covered under the manufacturers warranty.

CAUTION🚩 Carry out a back wash and rinse before using the filter for the first time to clean the filter and remove any excess sand and impurities (see the paragraph Filter and Valve operation). After the back wash, rinse before turning the valve to the Filtration position. After the back wash, with the multi-port valve set to Filtration, the black needle on the pressure gauge indicates the nominal pressure experienced by the filter. This pressure will vary as a function of the pump flow rate, the static pressure and load losses across the pipes. To keep a record of this nominal pressure (calibration), adjust the dial of the pressure gauge so that the blue needle aligns with the black needle.
IMPORTANT🚩 Stop the pump before each manipulation of the 6-way valve. Failure to respect this instruction could result in damage to the insides of the filter, the valve or the filter itself and will result in cancellation of the guarantee. • Before starting the pump, make sure that all the 1/4 turn valves are open and that the 6-way valve is set to “Filtration”.

Correct use of your pool requires optimal water treatment. Clean the cartridge regularly (refer to the cleaning protocol described in the filtration manual) and make sure that the daily filtration window is long enough .

Please see the attached installation manual for further information (as per section 11)

Winterising of the Tropic Octo 414 Pool:

Carry out a prolonged back wash of the filter. The pool should not be emptied during winter (or prolonged periods while the pool is not use). The liquid mass plays a several roles, providing thermal insulation, holding the liner and pool structure in position. Lower the water level to about 10 cm below the bottom of the skimmer mouth. Water can be siphoned from the pool or allowed to drain by gravity by moving the multi port valve to DRAIN. Water will run through the waste line. Do not run the pump during this operation.  Next, disconnect the pipe underneath the skimmer so that it can act as an overflow in the event the water level rises due to precipitation. Remove any water treatment chemicals from the skimmer (chlorine tablets,
flocculent, etc.).
Unscrew the return fitting face ring from inside the pool. Use a threaded winterizing plug or rubber plug (not provided) to block the return fitting from inside the pool.
Add an algaecide and a winterizing product (not supplied) to the water.
Remove the stainless steel ladder. Place a winter cover over the surface of the pool.
Winterizing is not mandatory, especially if the weather is clement and temperatures remain positive. In this case, maintain a correct water level in the pool and run filtration 2 to 3 hours per day. Check the water level in the pool regularly

Winterizing the hydraulic installation. Disconnect the return line. Allow water to drain from the suction and return lines. Open the plug at the bottom of the filter and allow water to drain away. Do not replace the plug before putting the filter back into service. Open the drain plugs on the pump and pre-filter. Leave the plugs open. Cut the power supply to the filtration control panel. In as far as possible, store the filtration group in a location protected from humidity. In the case of an unprotected outdoor installation, remove the pump and store it.

The pool must not be left empty over the winter period (or for any prolonged period of time). In fact, the liquid mass plays a dual role, it provides thermal insulation and acts as ballast, holding the liner in place against the pool structure.

Please also ask for information with regards to winterisation of the heat pump and other equipment you may purchased.
